Deacon Edward Scarbalis

ORDAINED 25 YEARS

Deacon Edward Scarbalis, 81, died Dec. 24. He was ordained in 1986 and ministered at Most Blessed Trinity Parish, in Waukegan.

A lifelong Waukegan resident, he was married to his wife, Pearl, from 1954 until her death in 1980.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps on active duty during the Korean War and in the reserves for several years after. He retired from Illinois Bell Telephone Company as an engineering manager after 37 years. He registered as a member of St Bartholomew Parish in 1954, and was the first chairman of the parish’s school board, a member of the parish council and a member of the parish staff.

As a deacon, he took on the parish ministry of care, volunteered as a hospital chaplain and a field advocate for the Marriage Tribunal, and was spiritual advisor for the Black Catholics of Lake County.

He helped administer Communion services at the Lake County Jail, and became a Knights of Columbus chaplain.

He is survived by four children: Edward, David and Stephen Scarbalis and Barbara Corso; also by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Sr. Margaret Rose Curry

TEACHER

Dominican Sister of Peace Margaret Rose Curry, 92, died Dec. 26 in St. Catharine, Ky.

A Chicago native, Sister Margaret Rose was a Dominican for 61 years. She ministered as a teacher, serving in Chicago at Our Lady of Peace and St. Bartholomew and as a school clerk at St. John Berchmans.

She is survived by a sister, Pat Rohde.

Sr. Timothea Reinert

TEACHER

Sister of the Resurrection Sister Timothea Reinert, 95, died Dec. 28 at Queen of the Resurrection Convent.

A Chicago native, Sister Timothea made her first religious profession of vows as a Sister of the Resurrection in 1935 and final profession in 1940. She was in the educational ministry for 67 years. She taught grade school for 30 years in the archdiocese, with 16 years at St. Thecla, nine years at St. Mary of the Angels, four years at St. Casimir Grade School, and one year at Queen of the Rosary; she also taught years in Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio and Florida. Sister Timothea then served 11 years as a library aide at Resurrection High School, taught religious education at St. Thecla and tutored children. Sister Timothea was an organist and taught piano lessons, did detailed craft work and liked to cook.

Sr. Valine Althaus

TEACHER

School Sister of St. Francis Valine Althaus, 100, who served in education for more than half a century, died Jan. 5 in Campbellsport, Wis.

A Wisconsin native, she was received into the School Sisters of St. Francis in 1927 and made her final vows in 1939.

Sister Valine served as a teacher from 1927 until her retirement in 1979. In the Chicago archdiocese, she taught at St. Philomena (1927-1932); Our Lady of Victory (1944-1951); St. Clara (1952-1955); and St. Bernardine, Forest Park (1961- 1962).

Sister Valine is survived by her sister, Annette Newcomer.

Sr. Corita Schmitt

HOMEMAKER, TEACHER AIDE

School Sister of St. Francis Corita Schmitt, 88, died Jan. 6, in Campbellsport, Wis.

A Missouri native, she was received into the School Sisters of St. Francis in 1946 and made her final profession of vows in 1954. Sister Corita served as a homemaker and teacher’s aide from 1947 until her retirement in 1997.

In the Chicago archdiocese, she served as a homemaker at St. Nicholas (1949-1958); St. Catherine Laboure, Glenview, (1964-1967); St. James, Arlington Heights (1967-1968); and St. Anne, Barrington (1988-1997). She also served as a receptionist at Kostner Manor, (1969-1970); and as a teacher aide at St. Philomena (1970-1972).

Sr. Mary Cecile Quirke

EDUCATOR, ARCHIVIST

Adrian Dominican Sister Mary Cecile (Michael Cecile) Quirke, 87, died Jan. 10 in Adrian, Mich. She was 87 and in the 64th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

A Chicago native, she graduated from Parker High School before entering the congregation. She spent 26 years ministering in education in Iowa, Ohio, Michigan, Florida, Illinois and California.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she was a teacher at St. Edmund, Oak Park (1957-1958); an administrator and teacher at St. Bernadette Parish, Evergreen Park (1970-1972), assistant director of the archdiocesan Religious Education Office (1972- 1973); a teacher at Regina High School, Wilmette (1973-1974), campus minister at Triton College, River Grove (1974-1979); a staff assistant at St. Mary Star of the Sea (1983-1988); on the development team at the Mission of Our Lady of Mercy (1988-1990) and document preservation director at the Catholic Church Extension Society (1998-2001).

She is survived by a brother, John, three sisters, Eileen Linden, Loretta Cafarelli and Adrian Dominican Sister Kieran Therese Quirke.

Sr. Petra Daschbach

HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER

Providence Sister Petra (Mary Elizabeth) Daschbach, 92, died Jan. 13, in St. Mary-of-the- Woods, Ind.

A Pittsburgh native, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence in 1939 and professed final vows in 1948. Of her 72 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered in education for 42 years.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at Providence High School (1945-1947; 1959-1965).

Sr. M. Claudiana Jachimowicz

EDUCATOR, MINISTER TO POOR

Franciscan Sister of Chicago M. Claudiana (Julia) Jachimowicz, 90, died Jan. 17.

Born in Michigan, Sister Claudiana entered the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago in 1938 and made perpetual vows in 1946.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she worked at St. Elizabeth Day Cere Center and was a teacher or principal at St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr; St. Florian; Five Holy Martyrs; St. Pancratius; and St. Louise de Marillac, LaGrange Park. She also taught at schools in Ohio and Indiana.

In 1983, she lost partial sight in her left eye and gave up teaching, choosing instead to minister to the poor at The Port in Chicago.

During her life of ministry, she also served as an assistant superior, local superior, local treasurer and local secretary for her congregation.

She is survived be her sisters Christine Palazzola, Theresa Lee and Barbara Jachimowicz.
