With this issue, the Catholic New World salutes and thanks the religious men and women who have devoted their lives to serving the people of God. 50 YEARS

BROTHER DAVID ADELSBACH, an Evergreen Park native who attended St. Philip Neri Parish, did maintenance work, supervised students and is a certified nursing assistant. He served at Mendel Catholic High School; St. Rita High School; Orsini Home Health Care; Franciscan Home Care; Augustinian Senior Care at Tolentine Monastery, Olympia Fields; and at the Sisters of St. Casimir motherhouse. He now is at the Austin Friary, Matteson, and cares for elderly Augustinian friars at Blessed Stephen Bellesini Friary, Lemont.

FATHER JOHN DOWLING, an Evergreen Park native from St. Rita Parish, spent most of his religious life as a missionary in Peru but also did pastoral work at St. Gall, St. Rita and in New York and Texas. He now is associate pastor at St. Turibius Parish.

FATHER KARL GERSBACH, from St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, did formation work and province administration, taught and researched Augustinian history. He served at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Monastery, Tolentine College, Olympia Fields; Mendel Catholic High School; and the Augustinian Provincialate, Evanston. He now is working at St. Thomas Monastery, Villanova University, Villanova, Pa.

FATHER JEROME HEYMAN, from Immaculate Conception Parish in Waukegan, was a parish minister, teacher and director of retreats and parish missions. He served at St. Rita High School; St. Rita High School Monastery; St. Rita Parish and in Michigan and Indiana. He now does sacramental ministry at Our Mother of Good Counsel, Homer Glen, Ill.

FATHER REINHARD STERNEMANN was a parish minister, school chaplain, administrator and building manager. He served at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Monastery and Tolentine Center, Olympia Fields and St. Rita High School; as a missionary in Peru and in Wisconsin, Michigan, Missouri, Arizona and Texas. He is retired at St. John Stone Friary.

FATHER R. WILLIAM SULLIVAN, an Evergreen Park native from St. Cajetan Parish, was a parish minister, teacher, chaplain, counselor and Augustinian province personnel director. He served at St. John Stone Friary; Mendel Catholic High School; Little Company of Mary Hospital, Evergreen Park; St. Clare of Montefalco; and St. Rita Monastery. He now is associate pastor, St. Jude Parish, New Lenox, Ill.

BROTHER THOMAS TAYLOR was a teacher and province administrator. He served at Mendel Catholic High School, Blessed William Monastery, St. Martin de Porres Academy, St. Rita High School, Hales Franciscan High School and in Michigan. He now is province secretary at the Austin Friary, Matteson.

BISHOP DANIEL TURLEY, from St. Cajetan Parish, has been a missionary priest and bishop in Peru, where he still serves. He also did formation work, was a rector and taught in the seminary there.

40 YEARS

FATHER JAMES THOMPSON, from St. Rita Parish, did pastoral and formation work and counseling and was a hospital chaplain, He served at St. Rita Parish; St. John Stone Friary; and in Missouri and Ontario. He now is a chaplain at Little Company of Mary Hospital, Evergreen Park.

25 YEARS

FATHER BERNARD DANBER, from St. Rita Parish, was a teacher, school administrator and hospital chaplain. He served at Mendel Catholic High School Monastery; St. Dorothy; Brother Rice High School; St. Monica Monastery; Montini Catholic High School, Lombard, Ill.; and St. Francis de Sales High School. He now serves as a chaplain, Holy Cross Hospital, and resides at St. Rita Parish.

25 YEARS

FATHER EDWARD LINTON worked as a teacher, chaplain and pastoral minister. He served at St. Meinrad’s College, Marian Heights Academy in Indiana and now is pastor of St. James Parish, 29th and Wabash.

BROTHER NICHOLAS SCHUMER, an Evanston native, was a teacher and bursar. He served at St. Patrick High School for 26 years and is retired in Westmont.

50 YEARS

BROTHER KEVIN CONVEY, a Chicago native, was an administrator and university professor. He serves as director of Education and Mission for the Midwest District Provincial Office in Burr Ridge, Ill., and serves 17 high schools, three universities and seven middle schools across the Midwest District, including Chicago.

BROTHER DAVID GALINSKI, a Chicago native, has been a high school teacher, administrator and counselor. He serves at St. Patrick High School as a counselor and has been working there since 1971.

BROTHER THOMAS DOMINIC VANCE, an Oak Park native, has been a high school educator who served at St. Patrick High School for 30 years. He now works in development as an administrative assistant in the provincial office, Westmont, Ill.

Society of the Divine Word

75 YEARS

FATHER JOHN KERSTEN was a chaplain and author who did pastoral and missionary work. He served in the Netherlands; was a missionary in Indonesia, where he was interned for 14 months on the orders of a Communist commander of the Indonesian Army; did pastoral ministry in Mississippi for 30 years and held biracial parish meetings, which led to the Ku Klux Klan setting fire to the parish hall in 1964. He wrote “Guide for the Religious Instructor,” “Handbook for Catechetics in the Training Colleges for Catholic Teachers” and “Holy Marriage.” He is retired at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

70 YEARS

FATHER CHARLES SCHNEIDER was a missionary, community leader and administrator. He served in Ghana for 55 years and is retired at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

65 YEARS

FATHER ARNOLD LANG was a teacher, pastoral minister and chaplain. He served in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Iowa, West Virginia and in Appalachia. He is retired at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

50 YEARS

FATHER PETER SILVESTER was a missionary in Papua New Guinea and in the southern United States. He is retired at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

BROTHER ROBERT ZALIKOWSKI was a maintenance engineer at Divine Word seminaries in the United States and a reading tutor and assistant office manager at the Sacred Heart Adult Education Center, Washington, D.C. He is retired at the Divine Word Residence, Techny.

25 YEARS

FATHER JANUSZ HOROWSKI has worked in pastoral care, school administration and philanthropy. He served in Mexico, Poland and Brazil and now is the director of development, Society of the Divine Word Chicago Province, Techny.

FATHER ROBERT KELLY, an Evergreen Park native who attended St. Sabina and St. Francis DeSales parishes, has worked in higher education, vocations, philanthropy and as a chaplain. He served in the Chicago Province and in Wisconsin, Iowa and Mississippi. He now is the director of Mission Appeals, Techny.

FATHER JOHN VINCENT BLAKE served in education and pastoral ministry. He ministered at Fenwick High School, Oak Park, and in Mississippi, Kansas, Wisconsin and Bolivia. He lives in retirement at St. Pius V Priory and does limited service in Chicago.

FATHER ROBERT ALEXIAUS GOEDERT, an Oak Park native from St. Pius V Parish, was a preacher and pastoral minister, provincial administrator and chaplain with the U.S. Air Force while living at St. Thomas Aquinas Priory, River Forest; Hines Veterans Hospital, Maywood; and in Louisiana, New Mexico and Michigan. He now is at St. Pius V Priory and does preaching ministry.

60 YEARS

FATHER BLASE KARAS worked with the poor and homeless and was a missionary to Novosibirsk, Siberia. He now is director of the Anawim Home for alcohol-dependent Polish immigrants in Chicago.

50 YEARS

FATHER NATHAN JASKULSKI has been a chaplain to the Felician Sisters. He served at Franciscan Village, Lemont, and now serves at the Felicians’ Peterson Avenue motherhouse.

BROTHER JOHN BUSH, from St. Agnes Parish, served his order by cleaning, cooking and tailoring. He served at St. Peter’s in the Loop and is retired in Sherman, Ill.

50 YEARS

FATHER JAMES HOFFMAN was a teacher, missionary, administrator and confessor. He served at St. Joseph High School Seminary, Oak Brook; the Franciscan House of Mary and Joseph and was Sacred Heart Province Animator for Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation, the province’s social justice program. He also worked in Michigan and was a missionary in Uganda and Zaire. He now serves as a confessor at St. Peter’s-in-the- Loop.

25 YEARS

FATHER LAWRENCE M. NICKELS, a Chicago native from Our Lady of the Ridge Parish, Chicago Ridge. He did pastoral ministry, social work, province administration and formation work. He served as a chaplain for the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and now is the executive director of the Franciscan Connection, St. Louis.

FATHER FRANCIS W. CUSACK, from St. Francis de Paula Parish, did pastoral ministry and retreat work. He now serves as the local superior of the Immaculate Conception Monastery.

FATHER SEBASTIAN MAC DONALD was a professor at the Catholic Theological Union, a provincial superior and now serves as the local superior, St. Vincent Strambi.

FATHER STEVEN RHEINHOLD BARTCZYSZYN, from St. Hyacinth Basilica Parish, has been a teacher, assistant principal, principal/president, rector, vocation director and pastoral minister. He served at Weber High School; Holy Cross High School, River Grove; the Office of Catholic Education as a high school consultant; and for 13 years helped celebrate weekend Sunday Masses and officiated at other sacraments at area churches and worked with auxiliary bishops as master of ceremonies. He now serves on the General Curia as 1st Councilor and Secretary General, Rome.

FATHER MICHAEL DANEK, from St. Hyacinth Basilica Parish, has been an associate pastor, pastor and provincial superior. He served at St. Hedwig; Weber High School; St. Hyacinth; St. Stephen, King of Hungary; St. Wenceslaus; and as provincial superior, Congregation of the Resurrection, USA Province. FATHER PAUL SIMS has been an assistant professor, high school president and principal, member of an administrative team and teacher. He is retired at the Viatorian Province Center, Arlington Heights.

FATHER DONALD FITZSIMMONS worked in secondary education and substance abuse counseling. He served at St. Viator High School, Arlington Heights; Lutheran General Recovery Center, Vernon Hills; Keys to Recovery, Holy Family Hospital, Des Plaines; and in Peoria, Ill.. He is retired at the Viatorian Province Center, Arlington Heights.

FATHER DONALD HUNTIMER worked in secondary education, parish ministry and as a chaplain and administrator. FATHER ARTHUR MCDEVITT, from St. Daniel the Prophet Parish, worked in education, administration and formation. He served at the Perboyre Mission House, Chicago; in Missouri; and at De Paul University’s School of Education, where he now is an associate professor.

SISTER LORAINE PFANNENSTIEL was a teacher and school administrator. She served 25 years in Chicago at St. Ambrose and St. James and in Wisconsin, Kansas and Indiana. She is retired and does volunteer work at Mercy Hospital and Aquinas Literacy Center.

50 YEARS

SISTER DOLORES LYTTLE is a Chicago native who was a teacher, school administrator and office coordinator. She served for 25 years in Chicago at St. Ambrose, the 8th Day Center for Justice and in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Kansas. She now works with the Big Shoulder Health Record Review Project and similar initiatives.

Benedictine Sisters of Chicago

70 YEARS

SISTER WINIFRED SOMMER was a teacher and principal who developed special methods for teaching blind students. She taught Braille in an archdiocesan program at St. Hilary, served for 36 years at St. Symphorosa and also worked at St. Joseph (Orleans St.), St. George (39th & Wentworth) and St. John Nepomucene. She is retired and lives at St. Joseph Court at St. Scholastica Monastery.

60 YEARS

SISTER BENITA COFFEY, from St. Gertrude Parish, ministered in education, adult spirituality and congregational leadership. She served as the Benedictine Sisters’ formation director and subprioress; was alumnae director for St. Scholastica Academy; and taught at Queen of All Saints; Mother of God, Waukegan; St. George (39th & Wentworth); St. Hilary; and St. Symphorosa. She now serves at St. Scholastica Monastery as vocation minister, director of the Benedictine Oblate program and promoter of social justice.

SISTER MARY FRANCES SCHERMERHORN, a Chicago native from St. Joseph Parish, Wilmette, taught and was a financial officer for her community and its schools. She served at St. John Nepomucene; St. Lambert, Skokie; and St. Scholastica Academy. She is semi-retired and does the financial work for the British Infant School, Skokie.

SISTER SUZANNE ZUERCHER, an Evanston native from St. Paul of the Cross Parish, Park Ridge, was a teacher, administrator and congregational leader. She also was a school psychologist, campus minister and author of five books in six languages. She served at St. Scholastica Academy, Loyola University Chicago, the Institute for Spiritual Leadership and she is a member of the Chicago Chapter of the International Thomas Merton Society. She also directs workshops and retreats and is a frequent presenter. She also does fundraising for St. Scholastica Academy and serves as an executive coach, psychotherapist and spiritual director.

80 YEARS

SISTER M. PIETA LANSBERKAS taught elementary school at St. George, Our Lady of Vilna and at schools in the East. She now does prayer ministry at her community’s Chicago motherhouse.

75 YEARS

SISTER FRANCES DEBULSKI, from All Saints Parish, was a teacher and librarian at Maria High School; St. Norbert, Northbrook; Immaculate Conception (44th Street); St. Anthony; Our Lady of Vilna; St. George and in New Mexico and Nebraska. She now does prayer ministry at her community’s Chicago motherhouse.

60 YEARS

SISTER M. MILDA BLINSTRUBAS taught at Our Lady of Vilna; Nativity BVM; St. Norbert, Northbook; and in New Mexico, Maryland and Florida. She now works as a master teacher and tutor.

SISTER M. MICHAELYN PAKROSNIS was a dietary worker at Providence of God; St. Bartholomew; St. Norbert, Northbrook; and in New Mexico, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Florida and at her community’s Chicago motherhouse, where she now does prayer ministry.

SISTER M. LEANDRA YERKES, from Nativity BVM Parish, did education and vocation work. She served at St. George, Our Lady of Vilna and in New Mexico and Argentina. She now does prayer ministry at her community’s Chicago motherhouse.

SISTER M. DOLOROSA WERTELKA, from Immaculate Conception Parish (44th Street), was an educator who served at Nativity BVM, St. George, Our Lady of Vilna, All Saints, Maria High School and in New Mexico, Indiana, Nebraska and Pennsylvania. She now does prayer ministry at her community’s Chicago motherhouse.

SISTER M. JULINE REVAS, from St. George Parish, has been a teacher, nurse and administrator. She served at St. Anthony, SS Peter and Paul, St. Bartholomew, Our Lady of Vilna, Providence of God and Holy Cross Hospital, where she now is vice president.

80 YEARS

SISTER AGNETTE BENGAL was a teacher, administrator, community leader, counselor and seamstress. She served at St. Gregory Convent and St. Alphonsus Convent, Prospect Heights; Mallinckrodt College of the North Shore, Wilmette; Josephinum High School; was a counselor to the provincial at her community’s Wilmette Motherhouse and ministered in Missouri, Michigan, Minnesota and Louisiana. She does prayerful presence among sisters at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette.

SISTER M. ANNE MARTY was an elementary school teacher, community leader and an English as a Second Language tutor of children and adults. She served at St. Mary, Riverside; St. Teresa of Avila; Holy Ghost, South Holland; and in Michigan, Louisiana, Missouri and Minnesota. She does prayerful presence at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette.

75 YEARS

SISTER RENEE MILLER, from St. Mary Parish, Evanston, was a teacher, sacristan, minister of care to the homebound and pastoral minister. She served at St. Aloysius; St. Isaac Jogues, Niles; St. Teresa of Avila; St. Margaret Mary; St. Theresa, Palatine; Josephinum Convent; Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette; and in Iowa, Missouri, Michigan and Minnesota. She is retired and does prayerful presence at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette.

SISTER MARIE MUHR, from St. Augustine Parish, was a sacristan for more than 60 years in various chapels, was a chauffeur and seamstress, and worked as a housemother at an orphanage staffed by her community. She served at Sacred Heart Convent and at her community’s motherhouse, Wilmette and in Missouri. She does prayerful presence at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette.

SISTER MARY EILEEN O’CONNOR, from St. Sylvester Parish, taught elementary grades through college, tutored, taught religious education and was a consultant and part-time receptionist. She served at St. Theresa, Palatine; her community’s motherhouse and Mallinckrodt College, Wilmette; St. Gregory; and in Louisiana, Minnesota and Texas. She works as a tutor and CCD liturgy consultant at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette.

70 YEARS

SISTER THERESE FIELDS taught kindergarten through seventh grade, offered prayer/retreat ministry and ministry with the poor, was a community leader and did formation work. She served at St. Aloysius; St. Martha, Morton Grove; St. Theresa, Palatine; St. Joseph, Wilmette; in Steger and Calumet City; and in Louisiana. She is a local leader and does prayer ministry at St. Mary of Celle Parish, Berwyn.

60 YEARS

SISTER ELIZABETH ANN BUSCHER taught, was provincial treasurer and worked on formation of seminarians. She served at St. Isaac Jogues, Niles; Mallinckrodt College; at her community’s motherhouse, Wilmette; and in Louisiana, Minnesota and Missouri. She now does collection and distribution of food and supplies for the poor and is a community seamstress and part-time receptionist at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette.

SISTER MARY ANN POPPLER was a teacher, pastoral minister and community leader who also served as supervisor of lay housekeeping staff. She served at St. Gregory; St. Teresa of Avila; St. Theresa, Palatine; Our Lady of the Resurrection Hospital; in Westmont and Chillicothe, Ill.; and in Missouri, Minnesota and Iowa. She does pastoral ministry at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette.

50 YEARS

SISTER DOLORES BOZIF has been a community leader, elementary school teacher, pastoral minister, local treasurer and religious education coordinator and teacher. She served at St. Teresa of Avila, St. Aloysius and in Arkansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Louisiana, where she now teaches elementary school in New Orleans.

SISTER BERNADETTE VOSS, from St. Margaret Mary Parish, has been a cook and homemaker and religious education teacher. She ministered to the poor and sick and did pastoral ministry. She served at St. Raphael Convent; Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette; Josephinum Convent/St. Aloysius; and in Missouri, Louisiana, Arkansas, Minnesota and Arizona. She now does prayerful presence at Sacred Heart Convent, Wilmette.

60 YEARS

SISTER CATHERINE AHERN, from St. Justin Martyr Parish, taught at Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette; St. Joseph, Homewood; and at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center for 30 years. She is retired in LaGrange.

SISTER HELEN BELSITO taught primary grades at Ascension, Harvey; St. Joseph, Homewood; and St. Celestine, Elmwood Park. She lives at the Dominican Life Center, Adrian, Mich.

SISTER CELESTE MARY BOURKE, from Our Lady of Peace Parish, taught elementary school and college and worked as a resident services director, chaplain and volunteer. She now does prayerful presence in Adrian, Mich.

SISTER MARION COPPE, from Our Lady of Peace Parish, taught primary grades, high school and adults all in Michigan, where she lives in retirement in Fraser.

SISTER NANCY FISCHER, from St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish, was a teacher and school administrator at St. Matthew and St. Joseph, Homewood, where she is retired. Sr. Elizabeth Lynch, from St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish, taught at St. Joseph, Homewood, and was principal at St. James, Maywood, and St. Denis, where she now does ministry of prayer and presence.

SR. ANN (ELLEN MAUREEN) MALONEY, from St. Ailbe Parish, taught, was a principal and coordinated adult religious education. SR. MARY CATHERINE NOLAN, from St. Felicitas Parish, was a theology teacher and Mariologist. SISTER LOIS GRAVER, a Chicago native from Queen of Martyrs Parish, Evergreen Park, was a computer programmer, teacher and treasurer of her Chicago regional community. She served at Continental Bank, St. Xavier College (now University), Siena High School and St. Monica. She is retired and does prayer ministry at McAuley East Residence.

SISTER NADINE HARGADON, from Precious Blood Parish, was a teacher, educational administrator, community leader and pastoral associate. She served at McAuley Convent and Provena McAuley Manor, Aurora; St. Martin de Porres; St. Charles Lwanga; St. Anne; St. Malachy; St. Paul of the Cross, Park Ridge; and St. Patrick Academy. She is retired but does volunteer work at Institute of Women Today, Chicago.

SISTER COLETTE JOLIE, a Chicago native from St. Paul of the Cross Parish, Park Ridge, has been a teacher, educational administrator and community leader and did formation work. She served at Siena High School, St. Patrick Academy, McAuley High School and for her community’s novitiate. She now is the president of the board of Austin Career Education Center.

SISTER ANITA NEW was a teacher and musician. She served at St. Catherine of Siena, St. Lucy, Resurrection, St. Gabriel, Holy Rosary, St. Anne, St. Joachim and in Wisconsin, where she is retired and does prayer ministry.

SISTER MARY PAULETTE O’CONNELL, from St. Gertrude Parish, was a nurse and administrator and taught nursing. She served at Misericordia Home, Mercy Hospital and in Iowa and Wisconsin. She now is a care volunteer at Misericordia Home.

SISTER JEAN SCHULTE, from St. Celestine, Elmwood Park, was a teacher, educational administrator, religious educator and pastoral worker. She served at St. Celestine, Elmwood Park; St. Raymond, Mount Prospect; St. Joseph, Wheeling; St. Emeric, Country Club Hills; St. Joachim; and in Iowa. She is retired and does ministry of prayer and cancer survivor support.

50 YEARS

SISTER PEG BARRETT, a Chicago native from St. Catherine of Siena Parish, Oak Park. Has worked in education, religious education, housing, community leadership and pastoral care. She served at St. Charles Lwanga; St. Bernardine; St. Catherine of Siena; Precious Blood; St. Cecilia; and St. Joseph, Libertyville; she was a religious consultant at the Archdiocese of Chicago School Board and with the Sisters of Mercy Chicago Regional Community; and she served in Bensenville and Aurora, Ill., where she is the director of pastoral care at Provena McAuley Manor.

SISTER JOY CLOUGH, a Chicago native from St. Terrence, Alsip, has been a teacher, administrator and writer. She served as the director of communications for the Archdiocese of Chicago; at St. Xavier University, Unity High School, Siena High School, St. Malachy and Queen of Martyrs, Evergreen Park; and was president of her regional community. She is the author of histories of Mercy Hospital and St. Xavier University and serves as the special assistant, Office for Mission and Heritage, at the university.

SISTER KAREN DONAHUE, a Chicago native from St. Mary Parish, Des Plaines, worked in teaching, communications, justice advocacy and community leadership. She served at the 8th Day Center; Misericordia North; Westside Network; Unity High School; Mother McAuley High School; St. Catherine of Siena, Oak Park; St. Cecilia; Hesed House; for the Sisters of Mercy Chicago Regional Community; and in Michigan. She is a member of the West/Midwest Community Justice team and lives in Detroit.

SISTER MARY FINNEGAN, a Chicago native from St. Catherine/St. Lucy Parish, Oak Park, was a teacher and administrator. She served at St. Angela; St. Helena; St. Joachim; St. Catherine; St. Malachy and St. Gabriel. She is the assistant principal at St. Mary of the Lake School.

SISTER ANN FLANAGAN, an Evergreen Park native from St. Leo Parish, has worked in health care, administration and Chicago Regional Community leadership and development. She served as vice president of the Sisters of Mercy Chicago Regional Community, at Mercy Hospital and at St. Xavier University, where she serves as the assistant director of development.

SISTER MARIE SHAWN GRASSBERGER was a teacher and administrator at St. John Berchmans; St. Pius X, Stickney; Resurrection; St. Stephen; Queen of Martyrs, Evergreen Park; Precious Blood; and in Sycamore, Ill. She is a volunteer archivist for the Sisters of Mercy West/Midwest Community in the Chicago Office.

SISTER NANCY PONZI taught and did volunteer work. She served at St. Anthony; Queen of Martyrs, Evergreen Park; St. Ita; in Streator, Ill.; and in Iowa. She lives in retirement at Mercy Convent and does prayer ministry.

SISTER MARGUERITE DE MARIE AUXILIATRICE KEMP has cared for the elderly poor and was an administrator and congregational leader. She served as provincial of the Chicago Province for 13 years and now works in administration at St. Joseph’s Home for the Elderly, Palatine.

SISTER MARY TIMOTHY DE ST. JOHN BAPTISTE FLAHERTY has been an administrator and certified dietary manager. She now works as director of dietary, St. Joseph’s Home for the Elderly, Palatine.

SISTER DIANE THERESE OF THE CROSS SHELBY is a nurse and administrator. She serves as director of nursing and vocation coordinator, St. Joseph’s Home for the Elderly, Palatine.

SISTER THERESE MARIE DE LA CROIX MINERICH, a Chicago native, has cared for the elderly poor, been an administrator and done formation work. She serves as the councilor provincial for the Province of Chicago at St. Joseph’s Home for the Elderly, Palatine.

SISTER CARMELINE PARISI, a Chicago native, cared for children and the elderly. She served at Angel Guardian Orphanage; in Belleville, Ill.; and in Indiana, Minnesota and Thailand. She now lives in retirement at the Catherine Kasper Home, Donaldson, Ind.

75 YEARS

SISTER JOHNILDA MANNHARD worked in education, childcare and home health care and as a dietary supervisor. She served at Angel Guardian Orphanage, St. Henry and St. Cornelius Convent; in Springfield, Belleville, Edwardsville, Germantown and Wendelin, Ill.; and in Indiana and Wisconsin. She continues her community service at Catherine’s Cottage, Donaldson, Ind.

60 YEARS

SISTER JOAN FISHER, a Chicago native, worked in education, administration, congregational leadership and created advocacy programs for the poor. She served at Angel Guardian Orphanage and St. Cornelius Parish; in Trenton and Cairo, Ill.; and in Indiana. She is one of the founders of Sojourner Trust House, Gary, Ind., and now does community service at Catherine’s Cottage, Donaldson, Ind.

SISTER MAGDALEN HELLMANN served in childcare, counseling, management and work as a sacristan. She ministered at Angel Guardian Home and other archdiocesan locations, in Bellville, Ill., and Indiana. She now is a volunteer at Nazareth Home, East Chicago, Ind., where she helps babies in crisis.

Poor Clares

25 YEARS

SISTER MIRIAM DUNCAN entered the Poor Clare’s monastery in New Mexico and came to help refound the Poor Clare life in the Archdiocese of Chicago. She now serves her Palos Park cloistered community as a sacristan, mistress of novices, librarian, seamstress, cook and gardener, among other duties.

70 YEARS

SISTER ROSEMARY MICKA was an educator at Divine Providence, Westchester; and in Madison, Meppen, Brussels, Venice and Granite City, Ill.; and in Missouri. She does prayer ministry at St. Clare’s Villa, Alton, Ill.

50 YEARS

SISTER HILARY (CAROLYN) HOOKS was a teacher, music minister and liturgist. She worked at Divine Providence, Westchester; in Granite City, Brussels and Godfrey, Ill.; and in Missouri, Texas and Pennsylvania, where she is preparing to teach English as a second language to immigrants in Pittsburgh.

60 YEARS

SISTER ROSEMARY GIRA, from St. Hyacinth Basilica Parish, taught first grade for 51 years and served at St. Mary of the Angels; St. Casimir; Queen of the Rosary, Elk Grove Village; and in Indiana, Nebraska and Florida. She now lives in retirement in Chicago.

SISTER MARY VIRGINIA TASNY was a teacher and administrator. She was a pilot teacher for the archdiocese and served at St. Casimir; St. Mary of the Angels; Queen of the Rosary, Elk Grove Village; and in Indiana and North Dakota. She now lives in retirement in Chicago.

SISTER MARIA GORETTI PIASECKA has been a catechist and early childhood educator. She is a volunteer at Resurrection Medical Center Day Care Center, in Spiritual Services and also is a student.

60 YEARS

SISTER PAMELA HICKEY, an Evanston native, has worked in high school education and counseling, parish service programs and school administration in Sacred Heart schools in Chicago and Lake Forest, Jospehinum, Providence-St. Mel, Catholic Charities and St. Joan of Arc School’s religious education program. She is doing prayer ministry and working in an adult literacy program in Chicago.

50 YEARS

SISTER JUDITH CAGNEY, an Evanston native, worked in education, school administration, finance, provincial leadership and social justice ministries. She served as president and in other capacities at Barat College, Lake Forest; Hardey Preparatory School for Boys; as provincial team member, Chicago Province of the Society of the Sacred Heart; and in Missouri. She now is the area director for the Society of the Sacred Heart, New York.

SISTER ANN MARIE CAPORALE, from Annunciata Parish, was a teacher, pastoral minister, massage therapist, hospice chaplain and bereavement coordinator. She served at St. Domitilla, Hillside; Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica; St. Francis de Sales Senior Center and St. Francis Hospital, Blue Island. She now works with Annunciata Parish as a sacristan, member of the liturgy committee, resurrection choir and as an assistant in bereavement ministry
