Sister Agnes Springer
TEACHER, ARCHIVIST
Sister of St. Joseph of LaGrange Agnes Springer, 82, died Sept. 25.
She was a teacher with an emphasis on art and the community archivist. She taught at St. Bonaventure; St. Mary, Riverside; St. Cletus, LaGrange; St. John Fisher; and St. Francis Xavier, La- Grange.
She is survived by her sister, Sister of St. Joseph Ellen Springer, and her brother, Karl Springer.
Sr. Margaret M. Angle
EDUCATOR
Holy Family of Nazareth Sister Margaret M. Angle, 85, died Sept. 30 at the provincialate in Des Plaines.
A Chicago native from St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr Parish, Sister Margaret joined the community in 1944. She taught at St. Michael the Archangel, St. Hedwig and Holy Family Academy, all in Chicago; St. Susanna, Harvey; St. Blase, Argo; and St. Andrew, Calumet City. She studied theology at Regina Mundi in Rome from 1957-60.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Sister Margaret served as CCD coordinator and/or director of religious education at St. Patricia and Transfiguration parishes. From 1962-87, she was a part-time instructor at De Lourdes College in Des Plaines and Mallinckrodt College, Wilmette. She served in parish administration at Immaculate Conception Parish, Chicago.
Retiring in 2001 to the Des Plaines provincialate, Sister Margaret served as a driver through 2008.
Sr. Joan Donovan
TEACHER, PASTORAL MINISTER
Adrian Dominican Sister Joan (Joan Michael) Donovan, 83, died Oct. 2 in Adrian, Mich.
A Detroit native, she ministered for more than 22 years in Illinois. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Laurence (1955-57); Santa Maria del Popolo, Mundelein (January-June 1964); and Regina Dominican High School, Wilmette (1964-65). She taught and was principal at St. Joseph School, Homewood (1957- 63), and she was co-provincial at St. Dominic Provincial House, Hometown (1969-71). From 1981- 88 she was pastoral minister at St. Denis.
Sr. Gertrude Eileen Getrey
TEACHER
Providence Sister Gertrude Eileen (Mary Helen) Getrey, 102, died Oct. 2 in St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Ind.
An Indiana native, she entered the Sisters of Providence in 1925. A Sister of Providence for 85 years, she was the oldest sister in the congregation, both in age and in years of membership.
During her years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered as a teacher for 57 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois and Massachusetts.
In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she served at St. Angela (1927-30), Our Lady of Sorrows (1931-32), St. Mel (1933-39) and St. Francis Xavier, Wilmette (1947-51).
Sister Gertrude is survived by a sister, Joan Sears, and a brother, John Getrey.
Father L. Dudley Day
TEACHER, PASTOR
Augustinian Father L. Dudley Day, 73, died Oct. 3.
A Chicago native from St. Rita Parish, he entered the Augustinian preparatory seminary on Staten Island, N.Y., in 1941. He entered the congregation’s novitiate after graduating from high school in 1945, and he was ordained in 1953.
He began teaching at Mendel High School in Chicago in 1954, and later directed the province seminary appeal, which raised money for the construction of Tolentine Hall in Olympia Fields. From 1961-76, he was the province’s vocation director.
He served at St. Rita Parish first as assistant pastor (1976-81) and then as pastor (1981-87). He then served at St. Rita High School and began to work with the Institute for Religious Life. In 1993, he moved to St. Monica Monastery, while continuing to work with the institute.
He retired in 1999 but continued to live at St. Monica Monastery and to provide pastoral ministries in various locations, including St. John Cantius Parish.
Sr. Margaret Anne Henn
TEACHER, NURSE
Sinsinawa Dominican Sister Margaret Anne (Mary DeMontfort) Henn, 91, died Oct. 5 in Hazel Green, Wis.
A Wisconsin native, Sister Margaret Anne made her first religious profession in 1947 and her final profession in 1950. She ministered as a teacher for 22 years; a nurse for 13 years; in support roles for schools, parishes, and community for seven years; and volunteered for five years. Sister Margaret Anne served in Illinois, Wisconsin, Montana, Iowa, California, Arizona and New Mexico.
In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Margaret Anne taught at St. Barnabas (1947-50), and served as support staff at Trinity Convent, River Forest (1985-86).
Sr. Teresita Kelly
TEACHER, ARTIST
Sinsinawa Dominican Sister Teresita Kelly, 96, died Oct. 7 in Hazel Green, Wis.
An Iowa native, Sister Teresita made her first religious profession in 1941 and her final profession in 1944.
She taught at the elementary, high school and college levels for 32 years and was an artist-inresidence at the motherhouse for 21 years. Sister Teresita devoted another five years to designing and supervising the art in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at the motherhouse.
In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Teresita taught at Ss. Faith, Hope and Charity, Winnetka (1941-42), and St. Thomas the Apostle (1945-53).
She is survived by a sister, Sister of Charity Marie Kelly.
