  • Parish potpourri —

St. Raphael the Archangel (Antioch) was one of the many parishes having a blessing of animals around the Feast of St. Francis. Their current church grounds, on a vintage farm, saw animal owners bringing creatures great and small from barn critters that moo to pets on a leash. . . . • R U Dizzy yet? —

Dominick Maino, a tenor in St. Benedict’s choir (W. Irving Park), has a lot to say about 3-D movies these days. Maino, editor of the journal of the College of Optometrists, is a professor at the Illinois Eye Institute/Illinois College of Optometry. As an expert in binocular vision, he’s recently been quoted in US News & World Report (Sept. 21, 2010) and ABCNews/Health website, about some viewers’ physical reactions to movies like “Avatar,” and “Toy Story 3.” Google his name and US News & World Report for an interesting assessment of “sickening” flicks. It isn’t just your imagination.
  • Keep on dancing —

An Alexian Brothers Center in St. Louis, Mo., devoted to elder care, was the site of a unique 2008 pilot study with 11 participants. The project applied a dance method (Healthy Steps) using favorite tunes to encourage movement (even in those who have to remain seated). The dance therapy has resulted in more mobility, better balance, fewer falls and more fun. Alexian Brothers Senior Services (Elk Grove Village) want to start such a program early next year.
