Fr. Anthony Hemphill
APPALACHIAN MISSIONARY
Father Anthony Hemphill, one of the early Divine Word Missionaries to work in Appalachia, died Aug. 9 in Techny. He was 79.
A Pennsylvania native, he began studying with the Divine Word Missionaries in 1944. He was ordained at Techny in 1958.
In 1978, Father Hemphill became the third Divine Word Missionary to go to Braxton County, W. Va. He took up residence at Techny in 2009
Sr. Ann Miriam Zell
EDUCATOR
Providence Sister Ann Miriam (Mildred Elizabeth) Zell, 96, died on Aug. 11 in St. Mary-of-the- Woods, Ind.
A California native, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence in 1932 and professed final vows in 1941.
In her 77 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered in education for 50 years.
In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she served at Marywood High School, Evanston (1935), St. Leo (1935-36) and St. Athanasius, Evanston (1960-62).
Sister Ann Miriam is survived by a sister, Norma Oster, and a brother, Dr. Harry J. Zell.
Sr. Margaret McHale

Sinsinawa Dominican Sister Margaret (Celsus) McHale, 78, died Aug. 13 in Hazel Green, Wis.
A Chicago native, Sister Margaret made her first religious profession in 1952 and her final profession in 1955. She was a teacher for 50 years, serving in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Alabama, Wyoming and Illinois.
In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Margaret taught at St. Barnabas (1967-68) and St. Vincent Ferrer, River Forest (1968-2002), where she continued to live in community until 2008.
She is survived by a sister, Dominican Sister Elwyn McHale.
Sr. Raphaelita Wollner
TEACHER, PRINCIPAL
School Sister of St. Francis Raphaelita Wollner, 98, died Aug. 18 in Campbellsport, Wis. A Wisconsin native, she was received into the congregation in 1930 and made final vows in 1941.
She served in Indiana, Illinois, Nebraska and Wisconsin. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Benedict School (1931-34), at St. Joseph, Wilmette (1942-47), and served as principal at St. Anne, Barrington (1961-64).
Sister Raphaelita is survived by her sister, Mildred Hawig.
Sr. Marion O’Keefe
TEACHER
Dominican Sister of Peace Marion O’Keefe, 86, died Aug. 23 in St. Catharine, Ky.
A Chicago native, she was a Dominican for 63 years. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Michael, Orland Park; St. Benedict; St. John Berchmans; and St. Bartholomew.
She is survived by a brother, Edward O’Keefe.
Deacon Thomas J. Solon
CLASS OF 1972
Deacon Thomas J. Solon died Aug. 23.
He was ordained in 1972 and served at St. Denis Parish. He worked as a teacher in the Chicago Public Schools for 38 years.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; his children T. Jay, Thomas, Phyllis and six grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Kay Kleczewski.
Sr. Mary Kardelis
EDUCATOR
Sister Mary (Aquina) Kardelis, BVM, 87, died Aug. 28 in Dubuque, Iowa.
A Chicago native, she entered the Sisters of St. Casimir in 1941. She later entered the Sisters of Charity, BVM in 1973. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Mary taught at St. Gertrude School (1972- 74). She then taught in the Chicago Public School system from 1974-82. From 1982-94, Sister Mary was a learning disabilities teacher at Hamilton School. She was a parttime teacher from 1994 through 2000.
Sr. Marie Eleanor Shaw
TEACHER, PRINCIPAL
Sister of Providence Marie Eleanor (Irene Mary) Shaw, 94, died Aug. 27 in Terre Haute, Ind.
A Chicago native, she graduated from St. Viator School and Providence High School. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence in 1933 and professed final vows in 1942.
She ministered in education for 51 years. Retiring from education, she gave volunteer service in Chicago for six more years.
In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at Our Lady of Sorrows (1963-65), St. Columbkille (1965- 68), Our Lady of Mercy (1978-81) and St. Francis Borgia (1984-90); and was principal at St. Mark (1968-78) and St. Agnes (1981- 84).
Deacon Richard A. Zborowski
FATHER OF PRIEST
Deacon Richard A. Zborowski, 87, died Aug. 29.
He was ordained a deacon in 1980 and served at St. Louise de Marillac Paish in La Grange.
He chaired the mathematics department at Riverside-Brookfield High School for 33 years.
He is survived by his children Msgr. Richard M. Zborowski, pastor of St. Theresa Parish, Palatine; Ronald; Robert; Nadine Wozniak; and Nancy De Vries; 10 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Rose Bogdan.
