Papal honors for Chicago priests
At the end of the Year for Priests, Pope Benedict XVI has honored a number of archdiocesan priests by making some his chaplains and others honorary prelates. Chicago has many priests who are exemplary in their life and their ministry, and a list of those deserving to be honored could contain hundreds of names. This list contains only 20.
Pope names 20 local priests as monsignors
Cardinal George has announced that Pope Benedict XVI, at the conclusion of the Year for Priests, has honored 20 priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago (see complete list on Page 3). The pope has named seven chaplains and thirteen prelates of honor for Chicago. Honorary chaplains and prelates have their origin in actual positions in the papal court, according to Father Thomas Baima, Provost of the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein.
Praying for the ‘storm of violence’ to subside
The sunrise was invisible, but the hundreds of people who showed up at Masses and prayer services on five South Side beaches in the early morning Aug. 21 took it on faith.
Called and Gifted program celebrates 30 year
The teachings of the Catholic Church aren’t “kid stuff,” said Ray Postel, and it’s important for adults — especially those active in lay ministry — to develop an adult understanding of the faith.
50 years of celebrating Indian Catholic heritage
In an Indian church dedicated to St. Thomas, the Apostle to India, more than 250 people — mostly of Indian descent — gathered for Mass with Cardinal George Aug. 21 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Indian Catholic Association of America in Chicago. Mass was held at the Syro- Malabar Cathedral in Bellwood. (The cathedral is the diocesan church of the St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese, an eastern-rite Catholic diocese.) A Latin-rite Mass was celebrated by the cardinal.
Remembering Mexico visit
Auxiliary Bishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller and Father Marco Mercado write about Cardinal George’s recent pastoral trip across the southern boarder
St. John Bosco said to youths, “Time passes slowly for the sad and very fast for those living with joy.” These words, frequently repeated by St. John Bosco, echo the experience lived by Cardinal George and the small group of us who went with him on his pastoral trip to Mexico July 1-7.
Once a religious brother, now a priest
The man known to Catholics all over the Archdiocese of Chicago as “Brother Ed” is now “Father Ed,” appointed as pastor at Immaculate Conception Parish in Morris, Ill.

Live in reality or live in dreams?
Chris Nolan’s highly-anticipated movie “Inception” has been deigned a “heist flick.” It has been called a meditation on the “nature of reality.” There is even a camp of “Inception”-haters who feel called to trumpet that “the emperor has no clothes.”

Once upon a time, we were a family with a consistent schedule. Every Sunday, we turned up in our parish church for 8 a.m. Mass, barring travel, illness or other events.
Doing so was not a hardship; with early-rising young children and dogs used to crack-of-dawn walks on workdays, we had been up for a while before it came time to head out for church. It wasn’t just on Sundays that everyone got up early; when Caroline and Frank were young, I remember hitting the grocery store before school a couple of times.
Fast forward a few years, and that consistent schedule has all changed.

One of the advisory boards Cardinal George regularly consults is the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council. The APC is comprised of two laypeople from each deanery and some others the Cardinal appoints from throughout the archdiocese. The group meets regularly during the academic year and is starting off its new year next month. Stephen Kubiczky, president of the APC, recently spoke by e-mail with Editor Joyce Duriga about the work of the council.
