Fr. Cosmo Militello

PASTOR

Father Cosmo Militello, pastor for over 20 years of Sacred Heart Parish in Melrose Park, died July 22 at St. Benedict Home in Niles. He was 76 years old and earlier this year celebrated his 50th year of priesthood.

Father Militello was a first-generation American and a Chicago native. He attended Our Lady of the Angels School and graduated from St. Angela School, Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/ Mundelein Seminary. He was ordained in 1960.

For his first 12 years as a priest, Father Militello served as assistant pastor at St. Simeon, Bellwood (1960-66), and Sacred Heart, Melrose Park (1966-73). For seven years beginning in 1973, Father Militello was the associate pastor at St. Andrew Parish on the North Side before returning to the western suburbs, where he spent the remainder of his ministry.

Father Militello served briefly as associate pastor of St. Priscilla Parish before being named pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Melrose Park in 1981. He served there for 23 years until his retirement in 2004, when he was named pastor emeritus.

Father Militello is survived by his brother, Joseph Militello.

Fr. Martin Borowczyk

PASTOR EMERITUS

Father Martin Borowczyk, pastor emeritus of St. Constance Parish, died July 24 at St. Benedict Home in Niles. He was 93 years old.

Father Borowczyk was born in Cicero. He graduated from St. Mary’s School, Cicero, Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary and the University of St. Mary of the Lake/ Mundelein Seminary. He was ordained in 1942.

For six years, he was assistant pastor at St. Turibius Parish, and from 1946 to 1955, he was a member of the Polish Mission Band and served the residents of Rosary Hill Center in Justice, where he resided.

Father Borowczyk then served at St. Ferdinand (1955-58) and St. Sylvester (1958-61). During his tenure at St. Sylvester, he taught modern languages at Mundelein Seminary. He then was assistant pastor at St. John of the Cross, Western Springs (1961-67) and at St. Eulalia, Maywood (1967-68). For seven months between April 1968 and November 1969, Father Borowczyk served twice at St. Symphorosa Parish as temporary assistant pastor, and also at St. Valentine Parish in Cicero, which is now closed. From 1967-69, he was a member of the Personnel Board of the archdiocese.

Father Borowczyk was named pastor of St. Constance Parish in late 1969 and served as pastor there for 19 years, until his retirement from active ministry in 1987.

He is survived by his sister, Therese Wojcik.

Sr. Angiola Stickelmaier

ART TEACHER

School Sister of St. Francis Angiola Stickelmaier, 88, died June 8 in Campbellsport, Wis.

An Illinois native, she was received into the School Sisters of St. Francis in 1938 and made final vows in 1946.

Sister Angiola lived her religious ministry in Illinois, New York and Wisconsin. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught art at Alvernia High School (1948- 1967).

Sister Angiola is survived by a brother, Gilbert Stickelmaier; and a sister, Elizabeth Mernic.

Sr. Ann Eschweiler

TEACHER, PRINCIPAL

School Sister of St. Francis Ann (Francesco) Eschweiler, 93, died July 2 in Milwaukee.

A Milwaukee native, she was received into the School Sisters of St. Francis in 1934 and made final vows in 1942. Sister Ann was a teacher, principal. In the archdiocese,

Sister Ann taught at St. Bernardine, Forest Park (1937-41); Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Glenview (1944- 53); and St. Cyprian, River Grove (1960-64); and served as principal at St. Joseph, Summit (1964-68).

Sister Ann is survived by her sister, School Sister of St. Francis Rose Eschweiler, and her brother, Father Edward Eschweiler.

Sr. Danieline Conroy

EDUCATOR

Sinsinawa Dominican Sister Danieline Conroy, 94, died July 3 in Sinsinawa, Wis.

A Chicago native, Sister Danieline made her first profession in 1938 and her final profession in 1941. She taught for 61 years. Sister Danieline served in Wisconsin, Alabama, Colorado, Minnesota and Illinois.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Danieline taught at St. Philip Benizi (1964-65) and St. Patrick, Lemont (1971-82), where she also served as computer assistant (1982-2000).

Sr. Helen Marie Zasadzinski

TEACHER

Franciscan Sister of Chicago Helen Marie (Emerencia) Zasadzinski, 99, died July 5.

A New Jersey native, she was taught by a Chicago Franciscan in Youngstown, Ohio. She entered the congregation in 1927, and spent 58 years as a teacher, teaching every grade from first through eighth, In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at St. Stanislaus Bishop & Martyr. In 2005, she moved to the congregation’s motherhouse in Lemont.

Fr. Paul Robb

MENTOR, TEACHER

Jesuit Father Paul V. Robb, 81, died July 4.

He was born in Ohio and grew up in Indiana. He entered the Jesuits in 1947.

Before ordination, Father Robb taught mathematics and moderated the school newspaper at Loyola Academy, Wilmette (1954- 57).

Following his ordination and doctoral work, Father Robb taught psychology as an assistant professor at Loyola University (1966- 68). From 1968-71, he also served as chairman of the Committee on Formation for the Jesuits in the United States.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Father Robb was an assistant professor at the former Jesuit School of Theology Chicago in Hyde Park.

In addition to his teaching and administrative duties, in 1974 he founded the Institute for Spiritual Leadership and served as director of the training program for spiritual directors until 1990.

After a sabbatical, Father Robb spent the next seven years leading workshops and writing about spirituality. In 1998, Chicago Province Treasurer Father Daniel Flaherty brought Father Robb to the province as assistant treasurer.

Sr. Beda Cleary

EDUCATOR

Sinsinawa Dominican Sister Beda Cleary, 90, died July 10 in Sinsinawa.

A Chicago native, she made her first religious profession in 1942 and her final profession in 1945.

She ministered in education for 46 years, teaching for 43 and serving as a tutor or aide for three.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Beda served as a tutor at Queen of Peace, Burbank (1987- 88).

She is survived by a brother, James Cleary.

Sr. Mary Curoe

EDUCATOR, PRINCIPAL, LIBRARIAN

BVM Sister Mary R. (St. Richard) Curoe, 88, died July 10 in Dubuque, Iowa.

An Iowa native, she entered the BVM congregation in 1939 and professed final vows in 1947.

In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Mary taught at Blessed Sacrament (1942-52) and was a school librarian at St. Odilo, Berwyn (1983- 87).

She served as teacher, principal or librarian at other schools in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Washington and New York.

She is survived by a brother, Robert, and a sister, Sister Janita Curoe, BVM.
