Father Tolton’s cause takes next steps

Archdiocese will form historical commission, guild and tribunal to move forward under Vatican guidelines

The canonization cause for Father Augustus Tolton, who served and died in Chicago, is moving along well. That is the observation of Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Perry who travelled to Rome for a June 9 meeting with the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints to discuss Tolton. Bishop Perry recently sat down with Editor Joyce Duriga to discuss the trip and the future of Tolton’s cause.

Pilgrims venerate Mother Teresa’s relics here

Hundreds of people lined up the weekend of July 17-18 for a glimpse of Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s sandals and rosary and a chance to make contact with a woman many believe was a saint.

His uncle died for his faith, beatified in June

Prospect Heights man remembers courageous uncle who was martyred

Marek Popieluszko of Prospect Heights was 14 years old on Oct. 19, 1984, when communist secret police kidnapped his uncle, Father Jerzy Popieluszko. The police tortured his uncle, locked him in a car trunk and then, while he was still alive, tied rocks to his legs and threw the Catholic priest into the freezing waters of the Vistula River near Wloclawek, Poland.

Who is that saint?

The Archdiocese of Chicago has 357 parishes. Some of them carry patron saints’ names that are either tongue-twisters or just make you scratch your head. Here are a holy dozen whose saints caught our fancy (and artwork from the parishes depicting them). We wanted to know more about them. We hope you do too.

WWII pilot laid to rest

Resurrection Parish in Chicago laid one of its own to rest July 14. That’s when Resurrection pastor, Father Paul Kalchik, celebrated a funeral Mass for the man who presumably died more than 60 years earlier.

Animated film not so despicable

The animated movie “Despicable Me” (also in 3-D) is something completely different. If you saw the trailer, you laughed, didn’t you? Well, there’s lots more funny in the movie.

Church Clips: A Column of Benevolent Gossip

Traveler’s ‘aid’ — What a joy to tell you about Sister Agnes Cunningham’s newest book of airy prayers, “Traveling Graces — A Little Book of Plane Prayers.” She is said to be the first woman theologian in the church, and definitely the first to teach seminarians at Mundelein. Her other degrees are many, with an expertise in early church saints and scholars. But she started first grade at age 4 at Nativity Parish in the arch’s Bridgeport neighborhood! Eventually the family moved to St. Gall’s (S. Kedzie), the only school here staffed by Servants of the Holy Heart of Mary.

The Family Room by Michelle Martin

The view of it is calming. The sound of it —whether it is the gentle lap of waves in a lake, the burbling of a small stream or the crash of ocean waves — washes away worries. No wonder the spiritual urges people to “Come to the water.”

No wonder kids love to go to the beach.

Frank and Caroline don’t do a lot of sand castle-building anymore, at least not on Chicago’s public beaches. But they are always up for a trip to the beach anyway. They get excited preparing for it: finding swimsuits and flip-flops or water shoes, packing towels and sunscreen and snacks.
