Sr. Mary Nora O’Connor
TEACHERSchool Sister of Notre Dame Mary Nora O’Connor died Feb. 3 at Resurrection Life Center.
A native of Chicago, Sister Nora entered the congregation in 1934 and pronounced her vows in 1937. A teacher for 35 years, she served in grade and high schools in Illinois and Wisconsin.
She also ministered to the retired members of the SSND congregation for 13 years. In the archdiocese, she served at the Academy of Our Lady School and Convent, St. Stanislaus Kostka Convent, Sacred Heart Convent in Hubbard Woods, and as a volunteer at St. Margaret of Scotland School.
Sr. Sara Hale
OUTREACH DIRECTORFranciscan Sister of Christian Charity Sara (Dorothy) Hale, 71, died April 4, in Manitowoc, Wis.
A Wisconsin native, she entered the convent in 1953 and professed her vows in 1958. Since 1992, she coordinated Joseph’s Coat and Holy Angels Thrift Center. She was also the director of Angels Outreach in Chicago.
She is survived by brothers Allan and Thomas and sisters Sarah Joyce and Martha Gorzlancyk.
Br. M. Oswald Ouellette
TEACHERMarist Brother M. Oswald Ouellette, 95, died April 7 in Chicago.
Born in Massachusetts, Brother Oswald professed his first vows as a Marist Brother in 1932.
He served as a teacher and treasurer at Marist High School from 1966 until 1992, when he retired. However, he continued to volunteer at the school.
He is survived by his sister, Anita Bourassa.
Fr. Lambert Zulkie
PARISH PRIESTCarmelite Father Lambert Zulkie, 80, died April 9 in Naperville, Ill.
A Chicago native, he attended St. Genevieve School and Mundelein Cathedral High School. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army from 1951-53 before earning a bachelor’s degree in English from DePaul in 1955.
He entered the Carmelites in 1985 and was ordained a priest in 1988. He ministered mostly in parishes in Kansas; New Jersey; Ontario, Canada; Massachusetts and the Diocese of Joliet in Illinois, where he retired in 2002.
Father Zulkie is survived by his sister, Therese Blus.
Sr. Betty Drew
EDUCATOR, PARALEGALHoly Child Sister Elizabeth “Betty” Drew, 75, died April 13 in San Diego, Calif.
A Waukegan native, she graduated from Holy Child High School in 1952 and entered the congregation the following year. She specialized in teaching reading in the primary grades for the next 23 years, serving in schools in the archdioceses of Philadelphia, Chicago and New York. In 1979, she went to Tijuana, Mexico, to minister to the needs of the poor. Since then, she has served the Latino community in Mexico and southern California. For the last 11 years, she provided pro bono paralegal services at Casa Cornelia Law Center in San Diego.
She is survived by her sisters, Marianne Drew Jula, Donna Drew Incaudo and Katie Drew Spong.
Sr. Ellen Mary Cull
TEACHER, PARISH MINISTERSinsinsawa Dominican Sister Ellen Mary Cull, 94, died April 14 in Platteville, Wis.
A Montana native, she joined the congregation in 1939 and made final profession in 1942. She taught elementary and junior high for 42 years and served in parish ministry, as pastoral minister and sacristan. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Sister Ellen Mary taught at St. Giles, Oak Park (1939-43) and Immaculate Conception (1950- 53).
She is survived by four sisters, Ellen Bouslough, Mary McGinty, Joanne Cull, and Dorothy Brown; and a brother, James.
Sr. Eva Dohman
TEACHERMercy Sister Eva Dohman, 95, died April 15 in Aurora.
Born in Chicago, she spent the first six years of her life in Ireland, following the death of her father. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1934 at age 18, and made perpetual vows in 1939.
The majority of her 45-year teaching career was spent in the Chicago Archdiocese where she taught at St. Gabriel (1936, 1960- 65, 1971-81), St. Cecelia (1937, 1947-48), St. Thomas Aquinas (1937-45, 1955-58), St. James (1945-50); St. Lucy (1950-51); St. Joachim (1951-52); St. Monica (1952-53); St. Paul of the Cross, Park Ridge (1953-54); Holy Family (1954-55); St. Irenaeus, Park Forest (1958-60); Mary Queen of Heaven (1965-69); and Mary Seat of Wisdom, Park Ridge (1969- 70).
