Church Clips by Dolores Madlener

Dolores Madlenera column of benevolent gossip

  • Never a dull moment —

Bishop Lawrence Sabatini, 80, is just an “ordinary” Scalabrini missionary. Which means: There is nothing ordinary about him. His book, “My Journey,”
My Journey book coverBook by Chicago-born Bishop Lawrence Sabatini
is a look back at his life. Some readers say they especially enjoyed the chapters on his 28-year saga in Canada among the aborigines. He was there for Pope John Paul II’s visits in 1984 and 1987. The book tells of pilgrimages he’s led, including to the Holy Land and a Eucharistic Congress in South Korea. I enjoyed reading about his youth, growing up with immigrant parents on Chicago’s near Northwest Side, the fourth of five kids. His Italian mother called them “le cinque piaghe del Signore” or “the five wounds of the Lord.” The bishop says they weren’t that bad. Sabatini retired in 2008 as pastor of Holy Rosary Parish (N. Western). You can order this hardcover book from the rectory, (773) 235-3575.
  • ‘Mea culpa, Fathers McKenna’ —

OK, (April 25-May 8) Church Clips made world traveler and great golfer Father George McKenna 20 years younger than he is, and a composer. There are two Fathers McKenna in the arch, but not related. The item should have read: Father Edward McKenna’s 70th birthday will be celebrated at a performance of his Irish Concerto on May 9 at the Fourth Presbyterian Church. (Mea maxima culpa.)
  • Got books? —

Most Holy Redeemer Parish (Evergreen Park) had a parish lending library of good Catholic books years before its permanent church was dedicated in 1964. Then space was set aside for a real library in the building. That parish library is still functioning in 2010 thanks to the continuing dedication of volunteers Mildred Para and Cathy Higgins. (Once a year they cull some books and have a parish sale.) . . . One alum of Siena High School (W. Washington) is trying to find a 1965 yearbook. She was one of 600 former students who attended the first all-class reunion in her old alma mater April 10. Contact Clips below if you have a yearbook and we’ll put you in touch.
  • Hills are alive —

St. Bartholomew Parish (W. Patterson) hosts the 1965 movie “The Sound Of Music,” 7 p.m. May 14, doors open 6 p.m., at the newly restored art deco Portage Park Theater, with a performance by the “St. Bartholomew Crusader Family Singers” before the show. Tickets $6 at door, 4050 N. Milwaukee, call (773) 286-7871.
  • Mary Month of May —

Joseph Malham, artist in residence at St. Gregory the Great Church (N. Paulina), created a series of icon banners
James Cromwell as Pope Pius XIIIcon banner of Mary, Mirror of Justice
to hang in the arch’s Meyer Center (S. Lake Park). Based on various titles of the Blessed Mother, the icons were “written” as points of meditation in the center’s seven conference rooms. They’re huge and gorgeous, in acrylic-on-canvas with 23k gold leaf halos. Malham also wrote the icon triptych of Cardinal Albert Meyer hanging in the lobby of the center bearing his name. Malham’s website is www.trinityicons. com. . . . Fifth-grade Girl Scouts of Troop 10848 in St. Christina Parish (S. Homan) completed a series of projects to earn the archdiocese Puella Mariae (Child of Mary) medal. Each girl’s final work was decorating a (shoe box) shrine to Mary. The 20 scouts will have their work on display in the church narthex during May. The award fosters devotion to Mary, and the spiritual meaning of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
  • Junior Clips —

    The after-school chess club
James Cromwell as Pope Pius XIIMichael Hall, 7th grader at St. Albert’s studies his chess move.
at St. Albert the Great School (Burbank) is open to grades K- 8. The program helps students focus, improves social skills and creativity. Plus it’s fun. . . . Men and women students and faculty of De La Salle Institute community raised $17,640 for St. Baldrick’s through pledges and donations.
  • Internet wisdom —

“There are many of us willing to do great things for the Lord, but few of us are willing to do little things,” Dwight L. Moody, Moody Bible Institute.
