Michael Sanzone

DEACON

Deacon Michael Sanzone, 67, died on Feb. 10.

Sanzone served as a deacon for 25 years at four Waukegan parishes — St. Bartholomew, St. Joseph, Immaculate Conception and St. Dismas — before serving at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Gurnee. He was also active in the SPRED ministry in Lake County and a member of the Army Reserves and U.S. National Guard.

Sanzone worked in various businesses before becoming a school bus driver in retirement. Sanzone is survived by his wife of 43 years, Margaret, as well as two children, Marc and Melissa, and three grandchildren.

Sister Kathryn McNulty

TEACHER

Sister of Providence Kathryn McNulty, 76, died on Feb. 13.

Sister Kathryn, born in Detroit but raised in Chicago’s St. Ignatius Parish, entered religious life in 1955 and professed final vows in 1963. Formerly known as Sister Loretta Michael, she earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree from the National College of Education.

In her 54 years with the Sisters of Providence, Sister Kathryn ministered for 46 years in schools as a teacher, including stints at Our Lady of Mercy (1962-1967), St. Andrew (1967-1970), St. Francis Xavier in Wilmette (1970- 1976), and St. Angela (1976- 1995). She also served at Providence Family Services from 1996-2002. She returned to the motherhouse in 2007, where she continued to serve.

Sister Mary Jane Newnam

TEACHER

Sister of Providence Mary Jane Newnam, 80, died on Feb. 13.

Sister Mary entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence in 1948, receiving the religious name Sister Patrick Ann. She professed her final vows in 1956.

Sister Mary ministered in education for 51 years in Indiana, California and Illinois, including teaching posts at St. Andrew (1951-55), Immaculate Conception (1976-1982), and Divine Savior in Norridge (1995-2003).

Sister Kyran Shea

EDUCATOR, ADMINISTRATOR

BVM Sister of Charity Kyran Shea, 91, died Feb. 21.

A Denver native, Sister Kyran entered the BVM congregation in 1937 and professed her final vows in 1944. In 1947, she came to Chicago to teach at Our Lady of Lourdes School for two years. She returned to Chicago in 1963 as superior at St. Gertrude School in Rogers Park, a post she held for five years.

Sister Mary Ellen Creedon

NURSE, SUPERVISOR

Sister of Charity Mary Ellen Creedon, 78, died on Feb. 8.

A native of Chicago’s South Side, Sister Mary Ellen attended St. Sabina School and Visitation High School. After a brief period of employment, Sister Mary Ellen began her postulancy as a Daughter of Charity at St. Philomena in St. Louis.

Following her initial formation, Sister Mary Ellen was sent to St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago to study nursing, where she served as a nursing supervisor for eight years before returning to St. Louis to study at Marillac College. In 1987, Sister Mary Ellen returned to Chicago as the assistant program director of senior services at the St. Vincent de Paul Center, a spot she filled until 1998 and continued on as a volunteer in later years. She served as a tutor at Casa Providencia until the time of her death.

Sister Mary Ellen is survived by her sister, Franciscan Sister Mary Immaculate (Julia) Creedon of Springfield.

Sister Charmaine LeMaire

TEACHER, COUNSELOR

BVM Sister of Charity Charmaine LeMaire, 84, died on Feb. 27.

Born in Blue Island, Sister Charmaine entered the BVM congregation in 1945 from St. Louis of France Parish in Chicago. In the Archdiocese of Chicago, she taught at Holy Cross School from 1948-1952 and at Holy Name Cathedral School from 1956-1958 and 1962-1964. In her 64 years with the Sisters of Charity, BVM, Sister Charmaine also served as a teacher, counselor, volunteer and tutor in western Illinois and Iowa.

Sister Lorraine Marie Mackin

EDUCATOR, THERAPIST

Adrian Dominican Sister Lorraine Marie Mackin, 85, died on Feb. 26.

The former Sister Kathleen Mary Mackin, a Detroit native, spent 65 years with the Adrian Dominicans as a teacher, occupational therapist and administrative volunteer. Her service took her throughout Michigan, Ohio and California as well as Chicago, where she taught at both St. Columbanus (1945-1947) and St. Philip Neri (1947-1950).

Sr. M. Caritas Domagalski

EDUCATOR, MUSICIAN

Holy Family of Nazareth Sister M. Caritas Domagalski, 92, died on Feb. 23.

A native of Chicago’s South Side, Sister Caritas celebrated 75 years in the Sister of the Holy Family of Nazareth in 2009. A graduate of DePaul University, her 75-year religious career took her to various elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago, including a stint at local superior and school principal at Ascension/ St. Susanna Parish.
