St. Thomas Becket Church
1321 Burning Bush Lane, Mt. Prospect
For all the historical dissension between Thomas Becket and Henry II, this little parish in Mount Prospect, named for the martyred bishop, can truly say, Friendship is spoken here.
For nine long years after the parish was founded in 1968, people set up folding chairs, a portable ambo and altar for weekend Masses in a public school, with daily Masses in homes.
A simple, modern all-brick church-CCD center and rectory, designed by James R. Cronin & Associates, was dedicated in 1980. Antiphonal seating, a plus here, was one of the fruits of a timely renovation two years ago.
Whether parishioners are pioneers or newer neighbors, a collective sense of service and justice has always been their charism. This roll-up-our-sleeves commitment was evident when parishioners worked in rehabbing apartments for the areas less fortunate recently. Priorities extend from faith, family, education, service and ministry to brats and beers at the yearly parish picnic celebrated last weekend.
